How to Write A Job Post: New Free eBook

I lost my job 72 hours before I became a first time homeowner. I still remember that day. I knew something was wrong. “We have some news,” he said, as if we were announcing a baby or a party. “Your position has been eliminated. I’m sorry.”

I was shocked. I remember starting to stammer questions as I went through every stage of grief in a matter of moments with a firm stop at “denial.” I had a mortgage to pay and I didn’t know where my next paycheck was coming from. I couldn't believe this was happening.

I didn’t have a network or connections to call. I was new in my career. So, I did what I knew how to do. I went online and started searching keywords. Job title after job title returned the same results.

    “We’re looking for a go-getter...”

    “A-players only!”

    “Best-in-class employer!”

Buzzwords that meant nothing. Skills that were exaggerated. The repetitive cliches and requirements added up to a distinct feeling that I didn’t matter. My favorite was when I saw someone requiring 15 years of Facebook experience when the site hadn’t been around that long. I had so much on the line and I felt like no one cared - about me or hiring the right person.

Learning How To Write A Job Post For Others' Benefit

When people ask why I give my job post writing workbook away for free, I tell this story. I want more people to learn how to write a job post so no one has to feel that way when they’re looking for a job.

Because as tens of thousands of people have been reminded over the last few weeks, that transition is anything but smooth. Job seeking is not meditative. It’s not healing. It’s scary, vulnerable, and frustrating. No one likes it.

For people who have a job, it’s not any better. I mean, most people don’t just wake up one day and look for a new job. People who are employed look for jobs because they’re not happy. So unhappy that they’re willing to change everything at the chance this could be better.

Don’t you think people who have already been through a shitty experience deserve better? Don’t you think that risk deserves a little respect? I do.
